The Importance of Communicating Your Design Work

Why Creating Quietly Isn't Enough
As creatives, we often find comfort in working quietly behind the scenes. We focus deeply on our tasks. However, silent work may feel natural, but it’s not sufficient to make an impact. In this post, I reflect on a nightly ritual I call “silent cookies” and how it brought me a powerful realization: our work, no matter how thoughtful, needs a voice. Here’s why clear, courageous communication is just as essential as great design.

The Hidden Work of Designers
Late at night, when the house is quiet, I make what I call “silent cookies.” This process involves no mixer and no noise—just a spoon, a pot, and a moment of calm. It’s my peaceful ritual as a mom and a creative. It’s a gentle way to create something beautiful without waking anyone.
But in design, silence doesn’t serve us the same way. As designers, we often create quietly, focusing on refining layouts, adjusting spacing, and selecting the perfect shade of blue. Our processes are thoughtful, yet often invisible to others.
Great work doesn’t speak unless we do. If we don’t share our process, our intentions, and our thinking, our work can go unnoticed or, worse, misunderstood. That’s why we need to amplify our communication. Not in volume but in clarity and consistency.
Because communicating isn’t just for us; it’s for our customers, too.
Don’t Forget to Communicate with Your Customers
Clients, collaborators, and customers are not mind readers. They want to understand our approach, our value, and how we can help them succeed. Designers and creatives sometimes hesitate to communicate too much. We're afraid of overwhelming others or coming off as "too much."
But here's the key: Don’t be too much, but keep the flow.
We should keep sharing, explaining, and keeping the door open for dialogue. Communicating clearly, kindly, and consistently builds trust. That is the foundation of every strong customer relationship.
Even Quiet Work Deserves a Voice
Creating in silence might bring me joy. But I’ve learned that silence cannot carry the message. Even the quietest creations deserve to be seen, understood, and celebrated.
Here’s to finding balance in our work: Creating with intention. Communicating with courage.
Thoughtful design paired with thoughtful communication isn’t just powerful; it’s unforgettable.
